How to Inspect a Used Car

Here's How to Inspect a Used Car:

Checking a car inside-out is very important, literally.  There are four areas you need to check.

4 Areas to Check Before Buying a Used Car

1.  Inside the Cabin

Make sure all the electricals and mechanicals work properly.  Things like windows, seats, meters, aircon, sunroof, fuel filler, wipers, locks.

Look around for damage.  Damage could indicate misuse, abuse or even theft.  A damaged seat belt or steering wheel indicates that the car has been in an accident.

2.  The Body

Consistency is the keyword.  Look at the paint, the panels, gaps between panels, color, tyres, etc.

Any abnormalty either indicates that repairwork has happened or is needed.

Check that the bonnet and boot both open and close smoothly.

3.  Under the Hood

You may have to take your mechanic with you for this one.  Check things like battery terminals, brake fluid, engine coolant and engine oil (colour and level).

Unclip the plastic engine cover and look under the engine oil cap.  If you see a white, mayonnaise-like creamy substance, we recommend you stay away from the car.  It could indicate irreversable engine damage due to a blown head gasket.

4.  Paperwork

Make sure all the paperwork is original and genuine.  A keen eye for forgeries must be ensured.  Look for the watermark.  You can verify what's written in the logbook by checking with the garage.

If you're buying from a private seller, insist to meet him at his home and make sure the address on the records is the same one he's calling you to.
